Nisum Chile Co-founder and Advisory Board Member Monica Retamal Receives Juscelino Kubitschek Visionaries Award

Kodea Foundation, led by Monica Retamal, is recognized for its extraordinary work in elevating women’s and children’s education, empowering them for the digital economy

BREA, Calif. [October 5, 2020] – Monica Retamal, co-founder of Nisum Chile and current Nisum Chile Advisory Board member, and Founder and Executive Director of Kodea Foundation, has received the prestigious Juscelino Kubitschek Visionaries Award presented by the Inter-American Development Bank. The award recognizes the work of NGOs working to improve the quality of life in Latin American and Caribbean countries through innovative and effective ways.

Kodea Foundation is a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to influence, inspire, educate, and facilitate access of people – especially women – to high quality IT opportunities, fostering social inclusion and gender parity in technology.  Kodea Foundation was awarded first place for its efforts in technological inclusion and digital empowerment, and it was selected among 300 organizations from 24 countries which are developing transformative projects in the fields of citizen participation, social inclusion, and equal societies.

“We are the youngest organization to receive it in the history of the award and the first winning Chilean NGO. This recognition is not only for Kodea, but also for the entire Chilean social organization ecosystem driving positive change in the education and health of children and women,” says Retamal.  “We have more than 234,500 organizations - private, autonomous, voluntary, and nonprofit entities - that provide assistance to many families that the State cannot reach.  Together, we are driven to achieve a prosperous and equitable Chile.”

The idea for Kodea Foundation was incubated at Nisum Chile, the LATAM headquarters for Nisum, a global leader in digital commerce based in Silicon Valley.  Kodea was created using seed funding support from Nisum, and it still operates today out of the global company’s Santiago office.  Nisum Chile’s general manager, Martin Lewit, is also a co-founder, board member, and treasurer at Kodea.  Nisum supported the Women Programmers program by providing employment opportunities to graduates of the project, and several Nisum collaborators have donated their time for various initiatives. Nisum is committed to continue supporting Kodea in order to contribute to Chile's local development.
